Exciting fall for varsity football

Season kicks off Aug. 19 for most area teams

By Greg Seubert

Wisconsin’s high school football season won’t kick off for another 1 1/2 months, but it’s not hard to pick out a few intriguing matchups from the schedule below.

Fans will notice some changes this season. New varsity coaches Tom Noltner and Brad Johnson are replacing John Koronkiewicz and Bob Sell at Waupaca and Little Wolf high schools, respectively.

Noltner was a longtime assistant under Koronkiewicz in Waupaca, while Johnson played his high school football in Manawa. Andy Kolosso has also stepped down as Hortonville’s co-coach. His son, Tom, who also served as the Polar Bears’ co-coach, has been named the program’s new coach.

Speaking of Manawa, the Wolves have moved from the Central Wisconsin-8 Conference to the CWC-10 starting this season.

Instead of conference matchups with Iola-Scandinavia, Weyauwega-Fremont, Amherst, Bonduel, Shiocton, Pacelli and Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Manawa’s new conference opponents are Wild Rose, Almond-Bancroft, Marion/Tigerton, Port Edwards, Rosholt and Tri-County.

Waupaca is back for the Comets’ second season in the Bay Conference. Waupaca qualified for the playoffs last year for the 25th season in a row, the second-longest current consecutive streak. Menomonie has the longest streak at 26 seasons.

The Comets posted a 4-4 record in the Bay and were 4-5 overall last year while competing in a conference that includes perennial playoff teams Xavier, West De Pere and Menasha.

Amherst rolled to an undefeated regular season that included CWC-8 and WIAA Division 5 state championships.

The Falcons lost University of Wisconsin recruit Tyler Biadasz and several other seniors from last year’s 14-0 team and will face a big test in their second game, as Amherst hosts defending Division 6 state champion St. Mary’s Springs Friday, Aug. 26.

Iola-Scandinavia’s season ended last year with a 28-21 Level 2 playoff loss to Springs. The Thunderbirds also lost University of Iowa recruit Kristian Welch, but have several players coming back with varsity experience.

Other games to keep in mind during the regular season include:

• Manawa at Iola-Scandinavia, 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19: The T-Birds will keep their long rivalry with Manawa going with a nonconference game at Thunderbird Field in Scandinavia.

• New London at Waupaca, 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2: New London has struggled since the Bulldogs fell to Wisconsin Lutheran in the Division 3 state championship game in 2007 and haven’t made the playoffs since 2009. However, New London scored a season-high 21 points against the Comets. The game, to be played at Waupaca’s Haberkorn Field, will be the Comets’ first home game without Koronkiewicz as the team’s coach since he took the program over in 1984.

• Wrightstown at Clintonville, 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2: Clintonville hasn’t made the playoffs since 2009, but a solid performance at home against Wrightstown could help turn the team in the right direction under third-year coach Scott Werfal.

• Hortonville at Fond du Lac, 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30: Fond du Lac won the Valley Football Association’s South Division last year with a 7-1 record, but fell to Marquette in overtime in the third round of the playoffs. Hortonville posted a 4-4 mark in league play, tied for fourth place with Neenah and qualified for the WIAA playoffs for the sixth straight year.

• Waupaca at Shawano, 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1: The Comets will play a rare regular-season day game, as Waupaca heads to Shawano for the Hawks’ Homecoming game.

• Iola-Scandinavia at Amherst, 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7: This CWC-8 matchup on the Falcons’ home field in Week 8 could go a long way toward determining a conference champion.

There are plenty of opportunities to watch the area’s 11 teams – Waupaca, Iola-Scandinavia, Weyauwega-Fremont, Manawa, Marion/Tigerton, New London, Clintonville, Hortonville, Amherst, Wild Rose and Almond-Bancroft – at home or on the road.

Whether one of those teams returns home with a state championship remains to be seen, but that’s what makes playing, coaching and watching high school football fun.
