After 10 years in the Assembly

Where is Waupaca County’s state representative?

Kevin Petersen claims to have represented the 40th Assembly District since he was first elected a decade ago.

Yet other than when he walks in Waupaca’s Fourth of July parade, rarely do his constituents see him, let alone get a chance to interact with him.

Rarely if ever does Petersen hold open events or hold public office hours in the district. The truth is that Petersen fears being held accountable by his constituents and area media outlets.

In essence there is no difference between Petersen’s and Walker’s records. Waupaca voters, and indeed all Wisconsinites, deserve much better from those who claim to represent their family and business interests in Madison.

Petersen’s voting record aligns completely with Walker’s radical economic and social agenda, beginning with the infamous Act 10. Six years later voters are asking why Petersen and Walker are cutting state funding in the hundreds of millions of dollars for our public schools and University of Wisconsin campuses statewide. One can only conclude that Petersen, Walker and the Republican Legislature remain hell-bent on privatizing our public schools and universities.

Petersen’s voting record is in lock step with the governor’s in destroying Wisconsin’s conservation legacy. Petersen and Walker support privatizing our state’s public natural resources, including our parks and waters, with no regard for the coming generations. Shame.

Waupaca County’s Main Streets and Chambers of Commerce need to question the direction of this state’s economy under Republican control in Madison. A shrinking middle class with less purchasing power is not good news for our region’s businesses. Without modern infrastructure and roads, how will businesses large and small get their goods to market or customers to their products?

The only relevant question before Petersen’s 40th assembly district voters is: Are you better off today under Petersen’s votes and Governor Walker’s policies?

Ten years later and just look at the state of affairs in Madison under Walker’s leadership and a compliant Petersen and Republican Legislature.

It’s time for change.

Dmitri Martin is the change 40th district citizens wish for and so deserve. And unlike Petersen and Walker, Martin will stay true to Wisconsin’s lofty ideals of open and clean state government.

Yes, we can have a state representative and government to be proud of again. Vote Democratic Nov. 8.
