On paper, it looked like an intriguing matchup.

Two undefeated, state-ranked football teams met Sept. 16 in Door County for what turned out to be a lopsided game.

Southern Door handed Iola-Scandinavia its first loss of the season by shutting out the Thunderbirds 31-0.

The Eagles scored on their first two possessions, led 21-0 and never let the Thunderbirds get past the Southern Door 31-yard line.

Nick LeCaptain capped the Eagles’ opening drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Samuel Gerend with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter. LeCaptain added a 64-yard TD run with 3:35 to go and hooked up with his brother, Derik, for a 38-yard pass midway through the second quarter.

Andrew Montana’s 33-yard field goal with 7:15 to go in the third quarter gave the Eagles a 24-0 lead and Southern Door found the end zone one more time on Nick LeCaptain’s 9-yard pass to Dakoda Kissinger with 3:05 remaining in the game.

The T-Birds fell to 4-1 on the season and will return to Central Wisconsin 8 Conference play at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, against Pacelli at Thunderbird Field in Scandinavia.
