Event recognizes county volunteers

County needs drivers, meal servers

More than 260 people attended “Prost to Volunteers,” the Waupaca County Department of Health & Human Services’ 23rd annual volunteer appreciation celebration Sept. 16.

The Iola Old Car Show activity building hosted the event, which honors those that volunteer with the department in the following capacities: committee and board members; transportation; office activity aides; children services; guardians; home-delivered meal drivers; site servers; health clinic; and lead wellness workshops.

The Jerry Schneider Polka Band provided the entertainment and the event included a German-style lunch for 267 guests.

The event is made possible thanks in part to the 93 local businesses that contributed food, door prizes, monetary and in-kind contributions.

Last year, volunteers donated 32,389 hours, drove 69,857 miles and served 72,423 meals, including 48,621 that were home-delivered and 23,802 at nutrition sites throughout the county.

The in-kind value totaled just over $500,000, according to Kristine Wiegman, the department’s volunteer coordinator.

“There is a great need for Meals on Wheels drivers and nutrition site servers throughout the county,” she said.
