Phantoms shut down Waupaca’s offense
By Greg Seubert
West De Pere handed Waupaca a 20-14 loss earlier this year in a Bay Conference football game.
The rematch wasn’t as close.
Austin Beaumire’s three touchdowns helped the third-seeded Phantoms end the sixth-seeded Comets’ season with a 35-0 loss Oct. 21 in a WIAA Division 3 Level 1 game in De Pere.
West De Pere took a 14-0 lead into halftime on a pair of short Beaumire touchdown runs, but still dominated the Comets over the first 24 minutes.
Waupaca ran only 10 plays in the first half – including only three in the second quarter – while the Panthers scored 10- and 15-play drives.
The Phantoms has 163 yards of offense in the first half alone and finished with 322 for the game. Waupaca, on the other hand, had 33 yards in the first half and only 40 in the second half.
Beaumire scored on a 3-yard run with 2:44 remaining in the first quarter and from a yard out with 4:55 to go in the first half.
His 2-yard run with 6:45 to go in the third quarter capped a 69-yard drive that gave the Phantoms a 21-0 lead.
Matthew McNabb picked off a Hayden Neidert pass to end Waupaca’s next drive and scored on a 7-yard run with 2:29 remaining in the third quarter.
He found the end zone again after intercepting another Neidert pass and returning it 42 yards for the game’s final score.
Waupaca ended its season at 5-5, while the 9-1 Phantoms will head to Luxemburg to play No. 2 seed Luxemburg-Casco at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, in the second round of the playoffs.
