Memorial funds near $170,000

Businesses, employees support veterans project

By John Faucher

The New London Veterans Memorial received another boost in contributions for the month of October.

On Monday, Oct. 17, employees from Bemis North America New London Campus presented a check for $10,000 to the New London Veterans Memorial.

Employees held fundraising events from May 25 through July 22.

Bemis representatives Lynna Wangelin and Kay Gielow said the idea started out as a Memorial Day project and went from there. Bracelets, pins, candy bars, popcorn and healthy lunches were offered to employees for purchase, with the proceeds going towards the memorial.

Employees also contributed cash donations.

“This was a very successful fundraiser,” said Wangelin. “A huge thank you goes out to all of the employees who helped make it happen.”

Wangelin said Bemis North America New London does about four to six fund raising events each year to support local projects in the community.

She and Gielow said they hope to organize another event for the Veterans Memorial next year to support the ongoing construction and maintenance cost for the memorial.

The New London Veterans Memorial remains nearly a year ahead of schedule.

Robert Dessort, Public Relations Chairperson for the Veterans Memorial Foundation said the group set out a little over a year ago, with a fundraising goal of $250,000.

“The recent donations put us nearly at $170,000 raised so far,” said Dessort. “It’s gone a whole lot faster than we thought,” he said.

When finished, the future New London Veterans Memorial will be a tribute to all veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
