Community Service Day

Students work at Iola Winter Sports Club

By Jane Myhra

Iola-Scandinavia students helped with several projects around the area as part of the school district’s annual Community Service Day on Monday, Oct. 17.

Several students spent the morning helping with cleanup at the Iola Winter Sports Club. One of the big projects was to clean up a pile of steel.

According to IWSC member Phil Jonsrud, the pile of galvanized iron was gathered by former IWSC member Roger Miller.

Jonsrud said Miller tore down fire towers from around the state, built radio towers and volunteered at IWSC.

“They thought they were going to build the 60-meter jump with this material,” Jonsrud said. “Miller and Milton Aasen built the 45-meter jump from the scrap steel. This pile is all left over from that time period.”

The students removed nuts and bolts before loading the steel in trailers. Jonsrud will store the materials for future building projects.
