Falcons cruise over Rockets
By Holly Neumann
The Amherst football team’s quest for back-to-back state championships is alive and well.
The Falcons found the end zone three times in the first quarter and went on to hand Spencer/Columbus Catholic a 42-14 defeat Oct. 28 in a WIAA Division 5 Level 2 playoff game in Amherst.
It was Amherst’s second straight win over the Rockets, as the Falcons defeated them 42-0 in last year’s Division 5 state championship game.
The rematch turned out be just as one-sided.
It didn’t take long for Amherst to score, as Brandon Piotrowski connected with Marcus Glodowski for a 76-yard touchdown pass on the game’s second play.
Piotrowski added a 3-yard run and Glodowski scored from a yard out with 1:29 remaining in the first quarter to give the Falcons a 21-0 lead.
The Rockets scored on Jarred Mandel’s 38-yard TD pass to Noah Zastrow, but Piotrowski answered with a 79-yarder to Josh Cisewski with 27 seconds to go before halftime.
Devin Ostrowski scored on runs of 3 and 12 yards in the second half before Carson Hildebrandt scored for the Rockets on a 15-yard run to wrap up the scoring.
Amherst will face Winnebago Lutheran Friday, Nov. 4, in Level 3. Kickoff is tentatively set for 7 p.m. in Amherst.
