Pond hockey is back

Fat tire bike race also scheduled in Waupaca

The fifth annual Waupaca Pond Hockey Classic and second annual Waupaca Fat Tire Bike Race are scheduled for the final weekend in January.

The hockey classic will return to the ice of South Park’s Mirror Lake Saturday and Sunday, January 28-29, while the bike race is set for Jan. 28 at the Waupaca High School soccer fields on King Road.

The hockey tournament takes hockey back to its origins as teams compete against the elements of late January Wisconsin weather as well as their opponent. All teams are guaranteed three games and can register for Open, 40-plus and Women’s divisions. Players must be at least 18 years of age.

Round-robin games will be played Jan. 28 and playoff games are slated for Jan. 29.

Local volunteers will create four 150-by-75-foot rinks just off the boat landing on Junction Street.

A heated tent will be available on the ice. The Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce will have food and refreshments available.

The bike race will begin at 11 a.m. and include one- and two-hour courses. There is a $25 registration fee and awards will be given at a ceremony held at the pond hockey tournament warming tent at Mirror Lake.
