Library celebrates Chinese New Year

Scandinavia Public Library hosts family program

According to the Chinese calendar, 2017 will be the year of the Red Fire Chicken. Families can drop in at the Scandinavia Public Library between 2:30- 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, to learn some of the traditions for ringing in the Chinese New Year.

Children can make a dragon puppet, a paper lantern, or a blossom paining. Some traditional foods associated with this holiday will be available for people to try.

Everyone can also learn how to say the proper New Year greeting in Mandarin Chinese and hear the story of Nian the dragon.

Also upcoming at 4 p.m. Jan. 24 is the next meeting of the Scandinavia Public Library’s Book Group. They will discuss Jason Reynolds’ young adult novel “The Boy in the Black Suit.” This “vivid, satisfying and ultimately upbeat tale of grief, redemption and grace” (Kirkus Reviews) was a 2016 Coretta Scott King Author Honor book.

The Book Group meets monthly, except for December, on the fourth Tuesday of the month at 4 p.m. Book selections vary widely and readers are welcome to participate as frequently as they choose. New members are always welcome.
