Iola hosts Winter Carnival

Lutefisk supper, craft sale, ice sculpting, ski jumping

The 56th annual Iola Winter Carnival will be held Feb. 4-5 in Iola.

The event includes a Norwegian Lutefisk Supper, craft sale, ice sculpting, ski jumping, snowshoe race, fat tire bike race and a free ice fishing contest for children.

The fun kicks off on Friday night with a Fat Bike Race at 6 p.m. at the Iola Winter Sports Club, located five miles northwest of Iola on County Trunk MM. All of the ski events are held at this facility.

The Saturday events include: Ice sculpting, 8 a.m. to noon, Iola-Scandinavia High School; Children’s Free Ice Fishing Contest, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., Olson Park; Norwegian Lutefisk Supper and Indoor Craft Sale, 1-6 p.m., I-S High School; Skijoring, 1 p.m., Iola Winter Sports Club; crowning of Queen of Snows, 3 p.m., I-S High School; Iola Twilight Snowshoe Race, 6 p.m., Iola Winter Sports Club.

The cost for the lutefisk supper is $14 for adults and $5 for children under 10. There is no cost to attend the craft show.

The Central Ski Jumping Championships begin at noon, Sunday, Feb. 5, at the Iola Winter Sports Club. Admission is $5.

The raffle drawing will be held after the ski jumping awards ceremony, at about 3 p.m. at the IWSC grounds. Raffle tickets are $2 each or three for $5, with a top prize of $1,000.

The raffle tickets can be purchased at area businesses or from members of Iola Lions Club, Iola Lioness Club, American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14 and Iola Winter Sports Club. Raffle tickets are also available from the Winter Carnival Court, which includes Kendall Johnson, Lauren Hayes, Madelyn Nelson, Amie Smith and Faith Loken.

The Iola Winter Carnival events are sponsored by Iola Lions Club, American Legion Sheveland-Taylor Post 14, Iola Winter Sports Club, Iola Lioness Club and Iola-Scandinavia Chamber of Commerce.
