Charges filed in child porn case

A 68-year-old man is accused of having nearly 9,000 images containing child porn.

Roy L. Sheraden, Waupaca, is free after posting a $2,500 cash bond on Feb. 14.

He faces 10 felony counts of possession of child pornography.

The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Sheraden in January 2016 after receiving a cybertip from the Wisconsin Department of Justice.

The cybertip reported that 48 images had been downloaded to Sheraden’s email addresses from June 11, 2015 to Sept. 13, 2015. About 30 of the images involved children under the age of 10, some of whom were performing sex acts.

On Feb. 23, 2016, Detective Sgt. Cameron Durrant, with the Waupaca County Sheriff’s Office, executed a search warrant at Sheraden’s home on Holmlane Road in Dayton.

According to the criminal complaint, Sheraden told Durrant that “it wasn’t for sexual gratification, but that they were cute.”

Sheraden’s computer and other digital devices were seized and sent to the state’s Department of Criminal Investigation Digital Forensic Unit.

The digital analysis of eight terabytes of data uncovered 9,000 images, some involving children between the ages of infancy and 10. The state completed its analysis on Jan. 31, and Waupaca County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Sheraden on Feb. 7.

Conditions of his cash bond include that Sheraden not leave the state and not possess any computer, cellphone or digital device that would give him access to the internet. He is also prohibited from accessing any social media.

Possession of child pornography is a Class D felony and carries up to 25 years in prison upon conviction.
