T-Birds one and done

SMC advances to regional final

By Greg Seubert

A first-round bye and a home game couldn’t help the Iola-Scandinavia boys’ basketball team in the WIAA state tournament.

The fourth-seeded Thunderbirds hosted fifth-seeded St. Mary Catholic March 3 in a Division 4 regional semifinal, but came up on the short end of a 60-30 score.

The Zephyrs will face top-seeded Shiocton at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 4, in Shiocton for a regional championship, while the T-Birds’ season ended at 12-11.

Almost half of the T-Birds’ points came at the free-throw line, as I-S connected on only eight of 41 shots in the game, including two of 23 in the second half.

St. Mary Catholic led by as many as 14 points in the first half and took a 28-15 lead into the locker room at halftime.

A 9-1 run to open the second half pushed the lead to 37-16 and the T-Birds never got any closer than 19 points the rest of the way.

Kenny Holz scored 12 points in his final game for I-S, while Charlie Stockwell and Connor Kurki added seven and six, respectively.

The Zephyrs, on the other hand, made 26 of 49 shots and outrebounded the T-Birds 41-24. Grant Boyson led four Zephyrs in double figures with 15 points.
