Iola Legion wins opener

Huettner strikes out six

The Iola American Legion Post 14 baseball team started off the season with a 9-0 win over the Shiocton Chiefs Monday, June 19, at Taylor Field in Iola.

Iola took an early lead in the game with four runs in the first inning, led by Cam Gruenwald who hit an out-of-the-park, two-run homerun.

Scott Aasen and Seth Korb each got an RBI in the bottom of the second to widen the gap to 6-0.

The Chiefs remained scoreless in the third, while Iola added another run putting them up 7-0.

With only one out on the board in the top of the fourth inning, Shiocton was able to load up the bases. Ervin Stedjee stepped up to the plate and flew out to Iola short stop Nate Korb, who threw the runner out for a double play.

Iola also loaded up the bases in the fourth inning, bringing Caleb Loken up to bat. Loken was hit with a pitch, which walked in another run, bringing the score to 8-0.

Iola scored once more in the bottom of the 5th inning to secure the 9-0 victory.

Leading hitters were Seth Korb 2-for-2 with a double and Cameron Greunwald 2-for-3 with a homerun. Nate Korb, Carter Kurki, Connor Kurki and Justin Sivertson each hit a single.

Bryce Huettner went the distance for Iola allowing only four hits, striking out six batters and walking none.

Iola will be back in action when they host Bonduel at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
