Irish sweep I-S meet

Wega-Fremont girls place fifth

It looks like Freedom High School still has one of the area’s top cross country programs.

The Irish had no trouble sweeping the Iola-Scandinavia Invitational Aug. 29 at the Iola Winter Sports Club complex.

Freedom had five of the top 10 runners in the girls’ race, including the top two finishers in Jaci Hinz and Lauren Vosters, to place first with 23 points.

Other team scores for the girls included were Winneconne (121), Bonduel (132), Wausau East (136), Weyauwega-Fremont (170), Pacelli (176), Lomira (179), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (207), Amherst (215), Stratford (234), Seymour (240), Clintonville (297), Waupaca (341), Wabeno/Laona (385), Oconto (442) and Manawa (514). Iola-Scandinavia, Marion, Oneida Nation and St. Mary Catholic had incomplete teams.

Iola-Scandinavia placed two runners in the top four, but did not field a full team. Erika Kisting and Jada Beacom finished third and fourth with times of 20:05 and 20:10 respectively. The Thunderbirds’ other runners were Makenna Brown (65th, 24:37 and Natalie Rustad (90th, 25:42).

Allison Halat led Weyauwega-Fremont by placing 25th in 22:44, followed by Natalie Schneider (27th, 22:45); Katie Bleck (44th, 23:45); Saylor Alberts (54th, 24:15); and Riley Bartel (55th, 24:19).

Waupaca’s runners included Karina Lisogor (60th, 24:29); Kristin Petkovsek (67th, 24:40); Mya Snyder (80th, 25:08); Justine Panzenhagen (106th, 26:56) and Brooke Hanson (107th, 26:58).

Manawa’s runners included Kate Phelan (127th, 27:46); Sierra Lubahn (149th, 29:18); Samantha Scheuermann (152nd, 29:30); Ayla Stiebs (153rd, 29:31); and Aspen Linjer (192nd, 34:20).
Team scores for the boys were Freedom (59), Wausau East (121), Winneconne (125), Amherst (148), Bonduel (166), Waupaca (176), Pacelli (179), Seymour (196), Lomira (214), Oconto (267), Stratford (271), Wittenberg-Birnamwood (319), Menominee Indian (367), Oneida Nation (381), St. Mary Catholic (388) and Weyauwega-Fremont) 391. Iola-Scandinavia, Manawa, Clintonville and Shiocton had incomplete teams.

Joe Makovec placed second behind Wausau East’s Jordan Straub in 17:29 to lead Iola-Scandinavia. Other runners for the Thunderbirds were Erick Kriewaldt (70th, 20:24); Erik Grenlie (136th, 22:56); and Trenton Niemi (153rd, 23:40).

Waupaca’s runners included Danny Esch (25th, 18:49); Colby Nimmer (29th, 18:57); Tyler Rogney (37th, 19:14); Abram Jackson (47th, 19:36); and Andy Schroeder (55th, 19:49).

Weyauwega-Fremont’s runners included Patrick Long (32nd, 19:05); Lupe Hernandez (75th, 20:30); Jakob Mills (177th, 24:49); Carson Kester (182nd, 25:03); and Chris Strehlow (187th, 25:14).

Manawa’s runners included Devin Loughrin (157th, 23:53); Jacob Scheller (178th, 24:49); and Ethan Tellock (206th, 28:24).
