Union knocks off state champions

Ash scores, adds assist

By Greg Seubert

What’s a quick way for a hockey team to get noticed?

How about opening the season with a win over a defending state champion?

Two early goals helped the Wisconsin Valley Union, a co-op girls’ team consisting of players from Waupaca, Iola-Scandinavia, Amherst and five other high schools, defeat the Central Wisconsin Storm 2-1 Nov. 21 at the Waupaca Ice & Expo Center.

Waupaca’s Markie Ash hand a hand in both Union goals that came in the game’s first seven minutes.

Ash and teammate Zoe Derks assisted on Kendra Robinson’s goal 45 seconds into the game, while Ash’s short-handed unassisted goal with 10:44 remaining in the opening period put the Storm, a co-op of Wausau area teams, in a 2-0 hole.

Those two goals would be all the Union would need. The Storm’s Emma Kysely cut the lead in half four minutes into the second period off of an assist from Emelia Edmondson and Kristin Deffner, but neither team scored again.

The Storm outshot the Union 37-22. Union goalie Pistol Cowden finished with 36 saves, with several of them coming as the Storm tried to tie the game in the final minute.

Besides Ash, other Waupaca players on the Union roster are Kylie Hiddemen, Kara Kohutek, Anna Ryder, Cadie Ash, Jamie Slattery and Avrey Simonson. All seven players played on the Waupaca Area Ice last season.

Union coach Dan Bauer coached the Ice last season.

The roster also includes Amherst’s Kendell Sheldon; Iola-Scandinavia’s Cierra Snyder; seven players from Stevens Point; two from Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids; and one from Pacelli and Spencer.

The team has four more games scheduled at the Expo: 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, vs. the Fox Cities Stars; 5 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, vs. the Icebergs, a co-op team based in Stoughton; 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 26, vs. Appleton United; and 5 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, vs. the Metro Lynx, a co-op team of Madison area schools.

The team’s other home games will be played in Stevens Point, Marshfield and Wisconsin Rapids.
