Panthers beat Comets

Waupaca defeats Mosinee

By Greg Seubert

After winning a tournament in northern Minnesota during the Christmas break, the Waupaca boys’ hockey team tried to make it two in a row at the Community Parks Hockey Classic.

Stevens Point, on the other hand, had other ideas.

Ten different players scored for the Panthers Jan. 13 during the Panthers’ 13-4 win over the Comets in the tournament’s championship game at the K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point.

Waupaca had advanced to the title game with an 8-2 win Jan. 12 over Mosinee.

SPASH took a 3-0 lead in the first period on goals from Jake Minch, Devon Blaes and Cole Beilke, but the Comets answered with a pair of goals late in the period.

Cody Rasmussen scored a power play goal with 1:07 to go in the period and Jack Menzies scored 38 seconds later, with Mitchell Trzebiatowski picking up the assist.

Dayne Hoyord gave SPASH a two-goal advantage 40 seconds into the period. Trzebiatowski’s power play goal less than two minutes later made it 4-3, but the Comets never got any closer, as Barrett Brooks and Carter Smigaj scored late in the period to give the Panthers a 6-3 lead.

Hoyord came up with his second goal 17 seconds into the third period and JT Dufresne scored less than two minutes later to make it 8-3.

Menzies scored the Comets’ third power play goal of the game, but the Panthers answered with goals from Eli Haas, Minch, Leo Knapp and two scores from Nick Norrgran.

SPASH outshot the Comets 52-24 and held Waupaca to three shots in the second period.

Eli Bartel gave Waupaca a 1-0 lead 4:04 into the game and Rasmussen scored Waupaca’s next three goals.

Each team added a power play goal in the second period. Spencer Schmirler found the net for the Indians, while Trzebiatowski scored with 1:22 remaining in the period to make it 5-1.
