FVL ends two-game winning streak

Fox Valley Lutheran handed Waupaca’s boys’ basketball team a 62-48 North Eastern Conference loss Jan. 25.

The Comets also picked up a 56-55 conference win Jan. 23 over Oconto Falls.

FVL outscored the Comets 29-19 in the first half and 33-29 in the second.

Waupaca’s Brandon Wanty led all scorers with 15 points, while teammate Shaun Anderson added 14. Ben Uitenbroek led FVL with 13 points.

Waupaca 56, Oconto Falls 55
A late technical foul and two missed free throws helped Waupaca get a road win over the Panthers.

The Comets led 36-31 at halftime. Hunter Marcom scored Waupaca’s first eight points of the second half, but the Panthers opened the half with a 16-6 run to take a 47-42 lead.

The lead changed hands four times before Mitchell Mann gave the home team a 55-53 lead with a three-pointer, but those turned out to be the Panthers’ final points of the game.

Anderson tied the game at 55-55 and a technical foul on Oconto Falls’ Dakota Carriveau gave the Comets a chance to take the lead.

Justin Vaughn made one of two free throws to give Waupaca the lead. A traveling call against Waupaca gave the Panthers another chance with 30 seconds remaining. Connor Peetz went to the free-throw line with 4.1 seconds to go after a Waupaca foul, but missed both free throws and the Comets were able to run out the clock.

Vaughn led all scorers with 18 points, while Marcom added 10 and Wanty finished with nine. Mason Sefcik led Oconto Falls with 14 points.
