W-F seeks funds for Steinway

School district selling piano keys

By Angie Landsverk

The Weyauwega-Fremont School District is raising funds to purchase a Steinway grand piano for the high school’s new Performing Arts Center.

The district’s goal is to raise $85,000 to buy the piano and its accessories, which include a cover and dolly system.

Since it received an anonymous donation of $25,000 last summer to go toward the cost, this means it needs to raise another $60,000 to meet the $85,000 goal.

One way it is trying to raise money is through a key fundraiser.

District Administrator Scott Bleck mentioned this initiative during the school board’s Feb. 26 meeting.

There are 88 keys on a piano, and the district wants to “sell” each of them.

Donors who “purchase a key” will be recognized in the new Performing Arts Center.

Bleck told the board six keys had been sold thus far at $500 per key.

People may visit steinwaymadison.com/donate-a-key-weyauwega to learn about this fundraiser.

Those who want to contribute may then select a key on the piano.

The keys already sold are red in color.

The district will also advertise this fundraiser during its fine arts events, Bleck said.

The model the district wants to buy from Steinway & Sons, in Madison, is almost 7 feet in length.

It has been lightly used by George Winston, Frank Sinatra Jr., Don McLean, Harley-Davison and also at Madison’s Concerts on the Square.

In addition to being used for student performances, the high school’s new Performing Arts Center will also be available for rent by musicians and groups.

The district welcomes donations of all amounts for the grand piano.

Donations are tax deductible, and people may contact Business Manager Drew Niehans at 920-867-8812 for more information.

Funds raised above the purchase price would be put into a segregated account for future maintenance of the piano.

Additional costs would be covered through the high school’s operating budget.

Checks, payable to Weyauwega-Fremont School District, may be mailed to: Weyauwega-Fremont School District, Attn: Director of Business Services, 410 E. Ann St., Weyauwega, WI 54983.

Donors are asked to write “88 keys donation” in the check’s notation space.
