Library to screen classic comedy

Starring Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor

“Father of the Bride” will be screened at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 5, as the Waupaca Area Public Library resumes its First Thursday Film Series.

This 1950 film tells the humorous tale of Stanley Banks (Spencer Tracy) and his attempts to survive and cope with the marriage of his only daughter, Kay (Elizabeth Taylor).

Vincente Minnelli directed this popular comedy from a screenplay by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, which was in turn based on the book by Edward Streeter.

Others in the cast include Joan Bennett, Melville Cooper, Billie Burke, and Don Taylor as the prospective bridegroom.

Dr. Jack Rhodes will introduce the picture. Complimentary popcorn, soft drinks and theater treats will be provided.

According to Rhodes, this movie was so popular in its day that it not only introduced a successful sequel, “Father’s Little Dividend,” in 1951, but it also generated a 1991 remake starring Steve Martin and a follow-up to that picture in 1995.

Today’s audiences, said Rhodes, might well be more familiar with the Martin versions than with the 1950 original. “But,” he adds, “it’s amusing to see this 1950 original and the Oscar-nominated performance by the great Spencer Tracy, himself a native of Milwaukee.”

The film was also nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay.
