Students take Smokey home

Fire safety program in Weyauwega

The Weyauwega Fire Department has a Smokey the Bear program for the kindergarten classes in Weyauwega.

Smokey the Bear and a backpack, along with the story of Smokey the Bear, goes home with each student to share with their family.

After Smokey visits each home of the students, he goes back to school.

A random drawing then takes place, with one student from each class getting to keep a backpack and a Smokey the Bear stuffed animal.

This year’s winners were Bowen Sasman, Prestin Brewer and Lucas Mapes, all from Weyauwega Elementary School, and Brenley Knudsen, from St. Peter Lutheran School.

On day of the drawing, all the kindergartners received a Weyauwega Fire Department Junior Firefighter helmet to keep.

The fire department reminds area residents to be safe during the wildland fire season, or any time conditions are conducive to fire dangers in the outdoors.
