Burglary in Waupaca

Victim in jail during break-in

Demerray J. Gilliam, 33, Waupaca, is charged with burglary and criminal damage to property.

On Friday, May 4, Waupaca Police Officer Bret Rodenz was dispatched to an apartment on East Fulton Street.

The landlord said someone kicked in the door to an apartment while the tenant was in jail. A large TV was taken.

A neighboring tenant said he woke up to a loud pounding sound in the hallway at about 7:20 a.m. When he opened the door, he saw a man he knew as “Demerray” standing in the hallway with the TV on the floor.

Rodenz questioned the victim at the jail. He said he knew a man named “Demerray,” but did not know his last name and did not give him permission to take his TV.

Rodenz subsequently identified and located Demerray Gilliam, who said he broke down the door with his shoulder.

Gilliam was released from custody after posting a $1,000 cash bond.
