Comets split doubleheader

Waupaca receives No. 6 seed

Waupaca split a North Eastern Conference softball doubleheader May 18 at Little Chute.

The Comets also beat Wrightstown 14-2 May 17 and dropped a doubleheader to Denmark May 15.

Waupaca came up with a run in the top of the ninth inning of the opener.

Little Chute took a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and fourth innings, but the Comets tied the game in the fifth before scoring the game-winning in the ninth.

Mya Johannes, Ireland Grenlie and Miranda Brunner had two of the Comets’ nine hits in the game. Grenlie also picked up the win on the mound.

The Mustangs outhit the Comets 13-5 in the second game.

Little Chute scored twice in the first and once in the third, but the Comets tied the game in the bottom of the third. Those turned out to be the only runs Waupaca scored in the game, as the Mustangs came up with five of their own in the seventh.

Grenlie took the loss, but also had two hits and drove in all three of the Comets’ runs.

Sydney Behm had three of Waupaca’s 15 hits and scored three times in a win over the Tigers.

Johannes, Cadie Ash and Markie Ash added two hits for the Comets and Grenlie scattered five hits to get the win on the mound.

Maddie Rhodes, Makiya Wanty and Anna Ryder scored for Waupaca in the opener against the Vikings and Lylli Sondrol had Waupaca’s only hit.

Cadie Ash had Waupaca’s only hit in the second game, as her RBI single scored Rhodes.

Waupaca received a No. 6 seed in Division 2 for the WIAA state tournament, which got underway with first-round games May 22. The Comets will play at No. 3 Fox Valley Lutheran in Appleton Wednesday, May 23, and the winner of that game will play for a regional championship Friday, May 25, at a site to be determined.
