Comets tie Denmark

Waupaca heads to Rhinelander

By Greg Seubert

The Waupaca girls’ soccer team will hit the road for the first round of the WIAA state tournament.

The Comets received a No. 8 seed in Division 3 and will open tournament play at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at top-seeded Rhinelander on the Hodags’ home field.

Waupaca wrapped up the regular season May 25 with a scoreless tie with Assumption one day after finishing North Eastern Conference play with a 1-1 tie against Denmark.

The Royals outshot the Comets 6-3, but neither team scored in the nonconference matchup that was stopped because of a storm.

“Just over half the match was completed before a storm moved through,” coach Mark Polebitski said. “We completed 50 minutes before the game was cancelled. During the first half, the girls had the run of play. The pace was slow, as they played the night before.”

Waupaca scored in the game’s fifth minute, as Abby Williams took a free kick from just outside Denmark’s penalty area. The ball traveled to the near post, went off of goalkeeper Emilie Freitag’s hands, off the near post and into the back of the net.

The Vikings tied the game in the 70th minute for the game’s final goal.

Denmark outshot the Comets 19-4 and Waupaca goalkeeper Jocybeth Barraza finished with 18 saves.

“Although we were outshot, our scoring chances were better and we had better ball possession,” Polebitski said. “Jocybeth made a couple of outstanding saves to keep us in the game.”

The game was Polebitski’s final home game, as he is retiring from teaching and coaching at the end of the school year.

“This was a bittersweet match for me personally,” he said. “It was the last home varsity match I will ever coach. It was great to see a strong turnout of fans, especially former alumni, some of which traveled for the event.”
