Day on the Farm

Waupaca FFA holds educational event

By Lexi Rabassa, Waupaca FFA

Waupaca FFA held its annual Day on the Farm May 18 at Doug Abrahamson’s Dairy Farm.

The purpose of the event is to educate the fourth grade students about agriculture production.

Topics FFA members taught included farm animals, machinery, veterinary science, poultry production, milk products, and agronomy.

Six interactive stations were created to teach students about numerous facets of the dairy enterprise. The students were able to handle animals, ask questions about bovine, rabbits, goats, chickens and ducks.

Poultry production speakers described in detail the basic anatomy and life cycle of a chicken.

FFA members discussed veterinary science tools and techniques used to keep animals of all sizes healthy. Fourth-grade students learned about all the ingredients in a balanced feed ration and the importance of animal health.

Students were then allowed to taste molasses used to sweeten the feed.

Students were also given a tour of Abrahamson’s milking parlor and shown how cow’s milk is extracted from the udder. FFA members explained the process that transofrms milk into dairy products such as ice cream, butter and cheese.

The elementary students sampled ice cream and tasted a variety of cheeses made with goat’s and cow’s milk while learning Wisconsin dairy facts.

This year’s guest speaker was Clara Hedrich, owner of LeClare Family Farm. Hedrich’s operation includes a goat farm with a milking operation, artisan goat milk creamery, retail shop, and café. She talked about products made from goat’s milk, breed characteristics, techniques of observation, and management of a herd of 3,000 goats.

At the end of the day Doug Abrahamson gave the students a hay ride and quizzed them on what they learned from the presentations during Day on the Farm.
