Glimpse behind the doors

W-F High School holds open house

By Angie Landsverk

Area residents had the opportunity to see the work underway at Weyauwega-Fremont High School during an open house on July 18.

“We’re about a month away from opening the doors for students,” said District Administrator Scott Bleck.

The project is scheduled to be done before the start of the 2018-19 school year, according to Drew Niehans, the district’s business manager.

The $20.6 million project at the high school includes the addition of four classrooms, a 400-seat Performing Arts Center, a multipurpose gym and fitness area, new school entry, HVAC updates and remodeling throughout the building.

Added to the back of the high school, the four new science classrooms opened at the beginning of last semester.

That was one area of the school residents were unable go into last week due to a finish being applied to the floors in that wing.

The space has an industrial feel, with exposed ceilings.

Bleck said lesson plans may take place just by looking up at the ceiling.

Across the hall from the science classrooms, remodeling is taking place to create rooms for Project Lead the Way, computer science and a fab lab.

Bleck said the physical dimensions of this space remain the same as before.

The woods and metals classrooms will be to the far north, with access to the outside of the building, he said.

Over the course of about an hour, those attending the open house saw many aspects of the building and remodeling project.

They stood on the stage of the three-story high auditorium and learned there is a green room, which will be used behind the scenes during plays and musicals.

Residents saw the fine arts hallway, including the new location of the choir room, right across from the Performing Arts Center.

The choir room will now be next to the band room.

The high school’s gym is also getting updates, including new bleachers and fresh coats of paint.

“It will have heat and AC,” Bleck said.

There is a new layout for the locker rooms, and residents walked through the new fitness center and weight room.

“Today, the first pieces of equipment showed up,” he said.

The W-F Athletic Booster Club donated $105,000 to the school district for fitness center improvements.

Bleck said the area will include cardio work stations, a circuit training area and free weights.

One side of the fitness center area has garage doors.

These doors open to the high school’s new multipurpose gym.

This gym is meant to eventually replace the gym in the district’s old middle school, which is on Main Street, in Weyauwega.

Bleck said the garage doors mean the district will be able to use both spaces under the supervision of one person.

The high school’s commons/atrium area is also getting a makeover.

It has skylights, and the guidance officer and student center will be located here, near the remodeled high school office.

“It will be accessible to students as they need it throughout the day,” Bleck said of the student center.

The remodeling project also includes the creation of a community forum room.

This space will be used in a variety of ways, including for class meetings, small groups and by the community, he said.

Among those attending the open house was Ethan Feltz.

He will be a junior this fall and said, “I’m just happy this all happened.”

Feltz plays basketball and said the gym and fitness area were his favorite parts of the tour.

Bleck said a grand opening will take place in September.

“We’re very excited, thankful and appreciative,” he said. “We’ll be able to use this building for the next 50 years as we did when it was built in 1969.”
