Manawa hosts Rise Together

Opioid crisis focus of program

By Holly Neumann

An upcoming program will offer first-hand perspectives about the opioid crisis.

Rise Together is slated from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Manawa Masonic Center, 520 N. Bridge St., Manawa.

Local residents, law enforcement and public health officials will discuss the opioid epidemic in Waupaca County, followed by Rise Together speakers sharing their personal stories.

“The purpose of the event is to provide awareness of the opioid epidemic and the impact that it has on people and communities,” said Jed Wohlt, of the Waupaca County Department of Health and Human Services, which is sponsoring the event.

According to Wohlt, Rise Together is a group of activists who have personally struggled with drug addiction and recovery.

“Rise Together is located right here in Wisconsin and features speakers from around the state,” he said. “They share their experiences and provide inspirational messages to encourage and empower others.”

Wohlt hopes guests take away an increased awareness of the epidemic here in Waupaca County and how the impact is closer to home than some may think.

“We hope guests who are in need of resources are able to make those connections,” he said. “We hope to empower others to join and take action to help in the fight against the opioid epidemic.”

Citizens may learn how to get involved by attending the event.

“There will be opportunities to hear and meet people that have directly been impacted from the opioid epidemic,” Wohlt said. “Local resources surrounding addiction, mental health and support groups will also be present.”

The event is free to the public.
