Weather deals blow to World of Outlaws show at Shawano Speedway
To say that what happened at Shawano Speedway last Wednesday when the World of Outlaws Dirt Late Model Series was supposed to race there was disappointing would be an understatement.
The last two years, the weather has been perfect for this event. On the morning of this year’s event, it looked like once again weather wouldn’t pose a problem for getting the race in. That changed mid-afternoon when rain showers moved into the area. Shawano didn’t get the brunt of the rain, but it was on the southern edge of the rain area, and it did rain at the Speedway for about 20 minutes.
Cliff “Squeak” Miller was an early pioneer in local stock car racing
In 1959, the late Cliff “Squeak” Miller embarked on a local racing career, against the wishes of his wife.
“We just had a baby and we had just bought a new house. He knew some guys who were talking about building a race track in Shiocton and he was real interested in that,” said Percy (Miller) Suprise, Miller’s wife. “I told him, ‘Please don’t, we just got this baby and we just got this house.’ Well, I didn’t win. All of a sudden he was gone that first day.”
Scary IMCA Stock Car wreck is the talk of the moment regarding Shawano Speedway
There were some dramatic moments last week at Shawano Speedway, but when the dust settled, some drivers were licking their wounds, while others had clinched track championships.
The talk of the night and the talk on the Internet afterwards was about the big wreck during the early portion of the IMCA Stock Car feature. From my vantage point I couldn’t see exactly what happened because the scoring tower in the infield blocked most of the accident. What I did see, was a couple of cars that were running in the top five, got together, which caused the cars behind them to pile-up at the end of the backstretch.
