Jimmy Mars gears up for World of Outlaws show at Shawano Speedway

It's only a couple of days until the World of Outlaws Late Model Show hits Shawano Speedway. I've been In contact with Kevin Kovac, public relations director for the World of Outlaws Late Model Series over the last week. He informed me that haulers should start arriving in the middle of the night on Tuesday. He also forwarded me a press release regarding Wisconsin's Jimmy Mars gunning for the win on Wednesday. I have pasted the press release below.....

It's more than a race

As it is with all big specials we've come to the point of high anticipation for the event to take place. It's also the point where you hear about this driver is coming, or this driver isn't coming. It now appears that Jeep Van Wormer will not be coming to Shawano Speedway for the World of Outlaws show. I will admit, I am disappointed by that since he is one of my favorite drivers. It also disappoints me because he had the Shawano race on his schedule on his web site almost all summer. That's why you can never count on a driver being at a race until his hauler actually pulls onto the track grounds.

But you know what, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it because the race is still going to include some of the best dirt late model drivers in the country. I'm going to enjoy watching them race at our local track.

It's time to race

The invasion of outlaws on Shawano Speedway has begun. I had intended to blog throughout the day but I've been busy interviewing drivers. When all is said and done I would expect a little over 30 late models. The IMCA Modified drivers are just starting to arrive as I type this. The drivers that I have interviewed so far have had kind words to say about the track. All the World of Outlaws regular drivers are on hand. I wasn't expected Don O'Neal here, but he is in the pits. I had a chance to talk with him and he said this is his first trip to Shawano Speedway. Ronnie Lee Hollingsworth of Alabama is also here.

Local drivers include Mark Mitchell, A.J. Diemel, Todd Casper, Doug Blashe, Terry Anvelink, Chris Oertel and Nick Anvelink.

The state of dirt Late Model racing in eastern Wisconsin

For those of you who have read the article about the state of dirt Late Model racing in eastern Wisconsin in the August issue of Full Throttle, here is my opinion on what I feel should be done.

I agree with the drivers who stated track promoters, drivers and possibly even some business people should meet and discuss the Late Model situation in eastern Wisconsin. Whether anything constructive would come from these meetings is debatable but I feel it is better to discuss the issue rather than just sit back and hope things get better or stay status quo.

Is luck needed to win a championship?

There is a saying you may have heard, “It’s better to be lucky than good.” I’m not sure of the origin of the saying, but after last week’s racing action at Shawano Speedway, that saying came to mind for me. There were a couple of instances where luck, or bad luck, depending which driver you were, had an impact on the point battles for the track championship in two divisions.

Before I get too involved in explaining the two situations I need to make the point that for a driver to win a track championship at any track, the driver has to be a good driver. There is no denying that point. But having luck on your side doesn’t hurt.  Case in point what took place in the IMCA Modified and IMCA Stock Car features last week at Shawano Speedway.
