Committee to make recommendation on WWI cannon placement
The Facilities Committee met on Thursday, July 29, to discuss possible locations for the placement of the WWI cannon. The committee toured various locations including Olen Park, Main Street, and Riverwalk Park.
After touring the various sites, the committee unanimously agreed to offer the cannon to the American Legion to place in front of their building on Memorial Circle. If the Legion declines the offer, the committee decided that the cannon should be placed at Riverwalk Park near the dam. It was noted that the city will incur the costs of placing the cannon, regardless of it's location.
The committee also toured the bathrooms in W.A. Olen Park as part of their ongoing tour of all city properties. Park and Rec Director Dick Writt noted that the bathrooms were built in the 1930s and have been slightly altered throughout the years in an attempt to discourage vandalism.
Writt also explained some issues at the open shelter, where posts are rotting and shims have been inserted in various places to help keep the structure in usable condition. Writt said at some point these issues will need to be addressed if the shelter is to remain available and safe for use.
Writt also toured the Park and Rec Department workshop in W.A. Olen Park, noting that the building is valuable due to it's location at the center of the park. This means equipment can be stored within one of the largest areas that the department services, eliminating the need to haul equipment to and from the park.
The committee also toured the water and electric facility on 12th Street. City Administrator Lisa Kuss explained that moving staff from this building to City Hall in June 2007 was a cost-saving measure, as the departments are now able to avoid duplicating efforts at two separate locations. Also, the expense of having copy machines and postage meters in two separate locations has also been reduced.
The committee went on to discuss that the building would likely not be opened again to function in its previous capacity, as it is not handicap accessible.
Committee member Jerre Cummings questioned whether or not having documents stored at the building out in the open was a problem, as opposed to having them stored in a fireproof safe. Kuss responded that it is a concern, but there is no room available at the fireproof safe at City Hall.
The committee will continue their review of city properties in future meetings.
