I-S School District approves proposed $3.9 million tax levy
The school board noted this is not the actual budget for the 2010-11 school year. Adjustments will be made after state aid final numbers are received.
With the retirement of three long-term teachers at the end of the 2009-10 school year, the district was able to make staff reductions with minimal layoffs.
Like most schools in Wisconsin, the district's financial future looks a little bleak. With declining enrollment, the I-S schools will also see a decline in state aid next year, according to District Administrator Joe Price.
"I do believe we're in a little bit better situation financially than most districts in the state, but there will be a lot of challenges for us financially," Price stated. "I don't expect more money to come from the state anytime soon."
Despite less state aid, Price promised the district will "continue to do what we do well and live within our means."
"If we all work together, we can get through these tough times," stated board President Tom Opperman.
In other business, the district's voters agreed not to increase board member wages. They also voted to offer free textbooks to students and to increase lunch fees by 5 cents per meal.
