O'Brien appointed 3rd Ward Alderman
By a unanimous vote, Lincoln O'Brien was appointed to the vacant 3rd Ward Alderman position in Manawa at the Sept. 19 Manawa Common Council meeting.
That was just one of the many topics of discussion at the meeting. Several budget items were discussed including a presentation about the 2010 Audit Report by city auditor, Mike Lensmire. Lensmire said one issue the city has to be concerned about is the fact there isn't any working capital available in the General Fund. He also mentioned that the city is aware that this is an issue, and it has taken steps to prevent this from becoming a bigger issue.
The 2012 budget process is about to begin. The first 2012 budget meeting will be discussed as part of a committee as a whole on Monday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. Future meetings will be announced as they are scheduled.
The request by the City Assessor to do a paper re-evaluation for City property values due to the assessed value being 112 percent higher than the fair market values for the City was discussed. Cheryl Hass, City Clerk, said the paper re-evaluation is needed because the 112 percent is too high.
One of the most discussed items was the condition of the football field at Lindsay Park. It was brought up that Shiocton High School complained about the condition of the field after a recent game. Discussions at the council meeting revolved around adding black dirt to the field and reseeding the field. This brought up questions about when it would be done and if it would force either a high school baseball season or football season to be played at another facility until the field is ready again.
It was discussed that part of the reason the condition of the football field is the way it is, is the fact there are a lot more games being played on it than in the past when you also include the Pop Warner games.
In other news, it was announced that 78 kids participated in the 2011 Manawa Summer Recreation program.
Halloween Trick or Treating hours are set for Sunday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 7 p.m.
Hass was recognized for 35 years of service to the City of Manawa. Her anniversary date was Tuesday, Sept. 20.
