New Subway to be built in Weyauwega

Dec. 26, 2011 | 2 comments

Construction is scheduled to begin this spring on a new Subway restaurant.

When the Common Council met on Dec. 19, it approved Outagamie Co-op Services’ site plan for the project.

The new Subway will be built on the southeast corner of Lake Shore Drive and County Trunk X.

Outagamie Co-op Services already owns the Subway that is located within the convenience station at the corner of Pine and Main streets in Weyauwega.

It will move the restaurant from its downtown location to the site that is just off of U.S. Highway 10.

Outagamie Co-op Services purchased that eight-acre parcel in 2007. At that time, the property was located in the town of Weyauwega. The land was annexed into the city in May 2007.

Initially, the business proposed an approximately $2.2 million project on the site. A 5,700-square-foot building was proposed that would have included a gas station and food establishments.

"They’re scaling back to the Subway, at this point," Scheuermann said. "They’re leaving the rest of the property open for development."

The old fuel station that is currently on the property will not be torn down, she told the council.

The property is not in a Tax Incremental Financing District. Thus, Outagamie Co-op Services will be responsible for all infrastructure costs that are related to the project, including hookup to city sewer and water.

"It sounds like it will be open by mid summer," Scheuermann said of the Subway restaurant.

  1. I wonder if the city would have gone to the expense of annexing the property for a single stand-alone sandwich shop? Perhaps OCOOS should reimburse the city for those expenses? Perhaps the city should cede the property back to the township? Something doesn't smell right.

  2. Lastpercentile..the original plan was to build a gas station/convenience store. The city has been dragging their feet ever since the Co-op purchased this land.

Here's another spin. Maybe the conflict with the current Mayor being involved in this is/was the issue. Considering his family's ownership in the BP gas station; would having another just down the road from that be something he would give the go ahead for? Or be why this project has been dragging on for the past for years??? Just wondering....
