New Phantom Art Gallery exhibit to open
A new Phantom Art Gallery exhibit will open on Friday, Feb. 10 at the corner of Main and Fulton streets. The former Office Outfitters building has hosted several of these exhibits, and the most recent one has been removed in preparation for the upcoming one. Featured in the next Phantom Art Gallery will be the paintings of Marie App, the photography of Ken Dequaine, the pottery and paintings of Jim Lang, the paintings of Sue Martin and the photography of Thomas Young. As it is the middle of winter, a "meet the artists" reception will not be held outside of the exhibit. Instead, the artists are being invited to attend the Waupaca Community Arts Board’s Feb. 19 fundraiser at T.W. Martin’s Public House. The idea behind phantom art galleries is to fill the windows of vacant buildings with the work of local artists. These galleries are not open to the public. Instead, people view the art through the windows. It is a way to promote both art and available business space. Waupaca’s Phantom Art Gallery had expanded into two locations but will not be using the 108 N. Main St., as that building has been sold, which is a goal of the project. That building, which includes Dragonwings in it, began being used as a Phantom Art Gallery last fall. The space that had most recently been used by Snapdragons Tutoring Services had been used for an exhibit. The Phantom Art Gallery project is being spearheaded by the Waupaca Community Arts Board. Partners include the city of Waupaca, Waupaca Area Chamber of Commerce, Waupaca Area Public Library, Hidden Studios Art Tour, local artists and retailers. The idea behind phantom art galleries is to fill the windows of vacant buildings with the work of local artists. The galleries are not open to the public. Instead, people view the art through the windows. The gallery is lit from 6 p.m. to 1 a.m. Each time there has been a different display, artwork has sold. To date, artists Doris Weed, Kay Susnar, Kevin Knopp, Michael Patrick and Cheryl Mocaldo have sold artwork out of one of the Phantom Art Gallery exhibits. The artwork that will be featured in the next show will also be for sale. Transactions are handled at Embellishments and at Framing by Preston, both located in downtown Waupaca.
