Police make arrest in Waupaca school-gun case

April 19, 2012 | 12 comments

Police have forwarded charges to the Waupaca County district attorney’s office regarding the girl who brought a gun to Waupaca High School Tuesday, April 17.

The charges referred include felony possession of a firearm in a school zone, misdemeanor possession of a weapon by a person under 18 and misdemeanor carrying of a concealed weapon. The girl is 16 years old and charges have been referred for juvenile intake,

According to Waupaca Police Chief Tim Goke, police were contacted about the incident at approximately 6:18 a.m. Wednesday. They were told that the student had concealed the weapon in a handbag and had shown it to another student.

After obtaining a description of the handgun, police went to the suspect’s home.

"Family members were cooperative with law enforcement and officers recovered a firearm matching the description displayed at the school," Goke said in a press release Thursday morning.

The girl was taken into custody without incident shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday and detained at the Portage County jail.

  1. So much for the Salem-Witch-Trials and bully theories. I'm curious to hear what motivated her to take the gun to school.

And the parents were charged with neglect? Endangering the welfare of a child?

We have a mega-million-dollar county jail, but it can't hold a 16yo girl?

  2. The Waupaca County Jail doesn't have a juvenile intake.

  3. I am curious too as to why she brought a gun to school. Yes, since she did bring a gun to school she should suffer the appropriate consequence for her action.

The comparison to the Salem Witch trial was justified since no proof was mentioned in the first article, just a "she said" statement.

  4. A teen from the school told me that she brought it to scare people who were bullying her. She admitted to the police that she brought it and that is was LOADED!! So now, Cranky Lady, what do you have to say about that, after jumping to defend her so quickly in your post last night??!!!!

Crank! No it was not. The article was based off a press release not a police report. Did you forget you are reading a news paper article and not a court document. The case involves juveniles. No one has to give you or the news paper all the facts.

You are so busy trying to beat everyone up, because you could do their job better. You have created another victim. Have you thought about what your words have done to the boy who did the right thing. Stop being a crank and try being a Lady, help protect the kids that attend our schools.

  6. but yet the school was told that the girl was unstable many times and was told that the girl should NOT be in school. the school did nothing at the time and demand that she needed to be in school. i hope there will be a full investigation on " the bully " and why the school did nothing to fix the problem of the bulling that was going on. I'm sure there is one or two more kids that have been bullied by the same kid and they are scared to come forward. i hope those kids come forward. bulling should not be tolerated in any school for any reason. this is the end result of what happens when kids bully other kids. if you want a safe school then please teach your children at a young age that its not right to bully other kids and if they see bullying going on to report it to the authorities. the student who was shown the gun did the right thing to bad the school had a few chances to fix this problem before it escalated to this point. so this is my opinion its the schools fault.

And please teach your children to spell, to use correct punctuation and grammar, and to type.

It's increasingly clear they aren't being taught these things in school.

Mizmija should become a school physiologist. I wonder how easy it is to make decisions, about who should, and should not come to a public school. Think, before you post next time please.

  9. David Poeschl stated "We don't believe that there was any intention to use the handgun," I feel that she has a very thought out plan. If you're going to bring a loaded handgun to school to "scare" kids, you have already thought about all the things that could go wrong and what you would do. How scary is that to think about that she could have been responsible for the deaths of other children and staff if she would've went through with her thought out plan! This girl needs to go to jail and sit there for a lengthy period of time and she needs to be expelled. Period. There are far too many school shootings happening around the country, and none of us want to lose our children or spouses because a student wants to "scare" some other children.

  10. Make no mistake, this plan was not well thought out. That fact is indeed fortunate. Yes, even one shooting is too many. There are also far too many instances of easy access to a deadly weapon by children with no understanding. There are also far too many instances in our culture that remain focused on humiliation/violence as a way of solving problems (TV reality shows as an example). There is no question that this girl needs to be removed for everyones safety. But she, and no doubt the others in this scenario, also need a good deal of help and not just a lengthy time out.

  11. Lastpercentile, what is your problem? Correcting people on grammar and spelling? You are always finding negative things to say on news, no matter how fluffy or positive the content. Why are you so bitter?

I think my criticism of a writer - who can't spell, punctuate, or even capitalize a sentence; but criticizes a school system - is pertinent and useful.

I'm not sure how a kid taking a handgun to school is fluffy or positive; except from the perspective of the NRA crowd, who want to claim her as a would-be heroine.
