Bats topic at library
Bat ecology is the topic of the Tuesday, June 12 Lunch & Learn program at the Waupaca Area Public Library. The free program is open to the public, begins at noon and is expected to last one hour. It will include a light lunch. Space is limited. To make a reservation, call the library at 715-258-4414 or register online at www.waupacalibrary.org. The program will feature Bill Mueller, who is an ornithologist and conservation biologist at the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory. The observatory is a newly formed research organization that is located on the grounds of the Forest Beach Migratory Preserve, near Belgium, Wis. On June 12, Mueller will talk about bat ecology and demonstrate the use of the ANABAT electronic bat monitoring unit. The electronic equipment may be used to survey for bats in spring, summer and fall. Weather permitting, participants will go on a "bat walk" to learn the use of the unit and information on how to get involved as a volunteer. Those who attend will learn more about ways they can help with the conservation of bats. "We need to assist with learning more about the numbers and distribtution of bats in Wisconsin," said Mueller, who is the conservation chair of the Wisconsin Society for Ornithology and a member of its board of directors.
