Waupaca County goes big for Walker

Gov. Scott Walker, who won Tuesday’s recall election by a statewide margin of 53 percent to 46 percent, carried Waupaca County by a larger margin in 2012 than he did in 2010.

Voter turnout in Waupaca County also exceeded levels from both the 2010 gubernatorial race and the 2008 presidential election.

According to preliminary figures from Waupaca County Clerk Mary Robbins Will, a total of 21,832 votes were cast in Tuesday’s race between Walker and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. There are 28,683 registered voters in Waupaca County and turnout reached 76 percent.

Barrett failed to win a single precinct in Waupaca County.

Statewide, Barrett won in only 12 of 72 counties.

Walker defeated Barrett by a margin of 14,093 to 7,560 in Waupaca County. Independent Hari Trivedi received 126 votes and there were a scattering of 14 write-ins.

In 2010, Walker garnered 10,596 votes to Barrett’s 7,072 in Waupaca County, with an estimated turnout of 43 percent.

Walker received nearly 3,500 of the more than 4,000 additional votes cast in the 2012 gubernatorial race,

In the 2008 presidential election in Waupaca County, President Barack Obama defeated Sen. John McCain by 12,952 to 12,232 votes.

Waupaca County voter turnout in 2008 was at 67 percent.
