WFHS scoreboards to be upgraded

July 5, 2012 | 2 comments

The two scoreboards in the Weyauwega-Fremont High School gym will be replaced.

When the School Board met on June 25, it voted to accept the bid of $11,750 from Tim’s Lighting Company, of Weyauwega, for the upgrade.

Board President Neal Loehrke voted no. There were four bids for the project, and he was in favor of going with the bid of $10,925 from Nevco, a company headquartered in Greenville, Ill.

“I’m not able to support a smaller board for more money. The labor portion is the same on either one,” Loehrke said before the board voted.

Board member Doug Ehrenberg said, “Tim (Cullen) does a lot for the school district and doesn’t charge for it.”

Now that the board has approved the replacement of the two scoreboards, District Athletic Director Jeff Fahser will talk to the booster club and area businesses about their interest in donating toward the cost. The district will cover the remaining cost.

The scoredboards will be wireless and will be an LED system instead of a bulb system, said District Administrator Scott Bleck.

In other business, the board approved:
• The resignations of Debra Storlie and Carie Kollat. Storlie, who was a special education teacher, is retiring. Kollat, who was the grades 8-12 guidance counselor, is going to Oshkosh Lourdes.
• The hiring of Andrew Schmidt as the middle school/high school instrumental band instructor, Jennifer Huffman as the school psychologist, Molly Fee as an elementary administrative assistant and Rebecca Heczko as a network technician.
• A trip to Florida for the high school softball team. The team will make the trip next March at no cost to the district. The cost of the trip will be covered by donations and fundraisers. Any remaining costs will be the responsibility of the players.

  1. Maybe Tim's Lighting is higher because he doesn't charge for what he does for the school district other times. Making up for that now with a high bid and smaller board. Not sure but are there any guidelines that say government bids must go to the lowest bidder?

  2. I doubt it, and I'm all for fiscal responsibilty, but it doesn't seem like a bad idea to keep a purchase like this local vs. spending the money somewhere else, in another state, no less.
