Kuehl comes up short
Kevin Kuehl did not receive enough write-in votes to appear on November’s general election ballot as the Democratic candidate for the 40th Assembly seat. Kuehl, whose name did not appear on the primary ballot due to an error in his campaign paperwork filed with the state, needed about 400 write-in votes districtwide to be listed on the November ballot. The seat is currently held by state Rep. Kevin Petersen, a Republican who was first elected in 2006. In Waupaca County, a total of 266 write-in votes were cast in the 40 Assembly District Democratic primary, according to preliminary results from Tuesday’s vote. County Clerk Mary Robbins said the names voters wrote in on their ballots will not be known until the Board of Canvassers certifies the results when in meets Monday, Aug. 20. In Waushara County, a portion of which is now in the 40th District, only seven write-in votes were cast in the Democratic primary for the seat. In other races in Waupaca County, Eric Hovde received 2,001 votes in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate. Tommy thompson received 1,757, Mark Neumann received 1,743 and State Rep. Jeff Fitzgerald received 536. Statewide, Thompson won the GOP primary with 34 percent of the vote, edging out Eric Hovde who had 31 percent. Neumann received 23 percent and Fitzgerald got 12 percent. State Sen. Luther Olsen garnered 3,864 voteS in Waupaca County against his Republican primary challenger, David Wayne Eiler, who received 727 votes. Olsen received 77 percent of the GOP votes cast in the 14th Senate District. He will face Democrat Margarete Worthington in the general election.
