Marquardt sent to prison
The retired Marion teacher who was convicted on two felony counts of repeated sexual abuse of a child will spend the next eight years in prison. Waupaca County Circuit Court Judge John Hoffmann sentenced Edward Marquardt, 61, after a hearing Wednesday, Oct. 17. In addition to incarceration, Marquardt was placed on 10 years of extended supervision and ordered to register as a sex offender. Hoffmann also prohibited Marquardt from working or volunteering in a position that would allow him to be in contact with children under age 16. The Waupaca County Sheriff’s Department began investigating the case in July 2011, after two boys came forward accusing Marquardt of molesting them. Detective Sgt. John Mocadlo interviewed a 14-year-old boy who said he had been helping Marquardt on his farm in the town of Dupont for about three years. He said Marquardt had also been tutoring him and his 12-year-old brother. The boy and his younger brother said Marquardt had touched them inappropriately when each of them was sitting next to him during the tutoring lessons. The 14-year-old boy said Marquardt had been touching him at least once or twice a week for about a year. During most of the incidents, both Marquardt and the boys were clothed. However, on at least two occasions, Marquardt exposed himself, according to the criminal complaint. They also said Marquardt had talked about having sex with animals. Investigators later arranged for the older boy to have a recorded telephone conversation with Marquardt. During the conversation, Marquardt admitted to touching the boy’s lap with the back of his hand. According to court documents, when the boy asked if he had ever been involved with other children in the past, Marquardt said his record was clear. hen, the boy asked if there had ever been incidents "off the record." Marquardt said yes. When questioned by investigators, Marquardt said he was a "sexaholic" and that he had been "hospitalized for it and just could not control himself." Marquardt later said he had been molested by an older male cousin when he was between the ages of 6 and 11. He said the cousin had encouraged him to have sex with animals. Marquardt told investigators that he had sex with goats almost weekly from his boyhood until he reached the age of 51. His wife divorced him after learning about his involvement with animals in 1985. Marquardt taught at Marion High School for 31 years. During the first eight years of his teaching career, he was also a counselor at the Wisconsin Lions Camp for disabled children in Rosholt. In 1985, according to court documents, Shawano County authorities questioned Marquardt after a teenage, boy who had been at the Lions Camp, reported a suspicious incident several years after it occurred.

Considering he wasn't charged for this crime, one would have to assume that WNOW including it in the story for its purely salacious value.

To lastpercentile: Not salacious value but rather insight into this man's character.

None? You must have a HUGE spectrum for what you consider to be normal sexual activity.
insight into this man's character
How much more insight do you need into the soul of an obdurate zoophile/pedophile?
Do want to see pictures? Video?
A homocapra hybrid?
That much insight?

The definition (there are probably a few) of "salacious" that I was going by was " Treating sexual matters in an indecent way." Reporting it as fact that came out in court is not treating it in an indecent way...it's listing a fact. Granted this is not a well written article, but after sitting through court and witnessing the biggest smokescreen I've ever seen to justify why Marquardt should have gotten off with a slap on the wrist, it is good to see there was no smokescreen in this report. Just the facts, man...just the facts.

I consulted several respected dictionaries (on the shelf and on the internet), and couldn't find that definition.
The standard definition is: "arousing or appealing to sexual desire or imagination; lascivious".
The "fact" had nothing to do with the crime, prosecution, or sentencing - and probably should not have been brought out during the case (if there were competent legal representation in this county). I'm not saying his zoosexual proclivities aren't horrendous, they just don't have anything to do with the current charges.
The paper added the "fact" to excite readers. They know it, I know it, and you know it.

LastPercentile, have you ever been involved in a court case? A person's character and past play a BIG part of the whole case, including sentencing, because it shows the court how likely the criminal is to re-offend (among other things)--and this one is no exception. There was plenty of information from Marquardt's past to show why he continued to have serious sexual issues...ones he perpetrated on children--and these boys weren't the first...only the first he was convicted of. Maybe you would like to get a transcript of the court proceedings before you pass judgement; they are very revealing. Many important facts are missing from this brief article, particularly the weak description of the crimes committed against these boys. This was a long-term, serious offense, done with calculated grooming and manipulation. Know your facts before you spout off your opinions, and show some compassion.

No convictions.
And, don't confuse what goes on in this county as "court".

Not salacious enough for you, either, I guess?

I don't think that dragging Marquardt's "zoosexual" behavior--as you put it--was necessary either for this article; I never said that. But it WAS brought up in court, several times, by both the defense and prosecution. However it was intended, to excite or inform, it may finally serve to prove to those in the Marion community who were still disbelieving, that their beloved teacher truly was capable of this. He certainly wasn't the man everyone thought he was.
