Security cameras in at library

Oct. 29, 2012 | 0 comments

The Weyauwega Public Library now has five security cameras.

Jim Taylor donated the funds to make the purchase possible.

He contacted library staff last summer after learning 74 books had been stolen from the library since spring.

When he heard the library wanted to get a security system, "he called and said he’d like to help with that," said Library Director Kristi Pennebecker.

As a result, five security cameras are now located throughout the library.

"How appreciative we are of the community for their support," she said.

Last May, library staff noticed books were missing.

That is because there were inter-library loan requests for titles of books which were supposed to be on the shelves of the Weyauwega Public Library but were not.

Staff did an inventory and found out how many more books were missing.

The Weyauwega Police Department was contacted, and officers watched sites like Craigslist to see if any of the stolen books turned up there for sale.

They did not.

The stolen books were of the young adult genre, and Pennebecker said they never did find the books.

She said the library cannot afford the electronic scanning system that some libraries have.
