Drake performs at Scandinavia Library July 20

July 8, 2010 | 0 comments

Come listen to the joyful music of folksinger David H.B. Drake as he presents "A Sailor's Songbag," at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Scandinavia Public Library.

This collection of "shanties" and "fo'castle" sailor songs, sing-alongs and stories about ships, the sea, the Great Lakes, and even the occasional pirate are performed on guitar, banjo, concertina, dulcimer and Native American flute. This concert is free and appropriate for all ages.

A native of Milwaukee, Drake has written more than 200 songs of the Midwest. They are frequently heard on Wisconsin Public Radio's "Simply Folk", "Higher Ground", and on public radio networks across the nation. David has served as the shantyman and educator for many tall ships including the HMS Bounty and the Clearwater. He currently serves as musical spokesman and music artist-in-residence/historian for the Wisconsin flagship "Denis Sullivan" and Pier Wisconsin Maritime Center.

The Scandinavia Public Library's adult lecture series continues at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 15, when Tammie Jo Berg presents "Haiti Relief Experiences." Founder of the global non-profit One Small Drop, Tammie Jo recently returned from Haiti where she offered relief services two weeks after the earthquake that devastated the Port Au Prince area.

Children ages 5-17 are invited to the library to live the life of a water drop between 2-4 p.m. Tuesday, July 13. They will travel through clouds, visit glaciers, and take a dip in the ocean while playing a fun water cycle game, then make a unique bracelet to commemorate the special journey. Children under age five may participate with adult supervision.

Lastly, children age 2-4 and their caregivers are welcome to attend Toddle Tales, a special story time featuring stories, songs and rhymes just for the little ones! Toddle Tales takes place at 10 a.m. on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month. The topic of the July 13 session is pond life with a special froggy craft afterwards.
