Talent show contest July 22 in Iola
With a limit of 20 spots, the talent show is filling up fast. Kafè Beans, 179 N. Main St., is the registration headquarters to sign up for the contest. There is no entry fee.
The event starts at 6 p.m. and takes place in the parking lot of downtown businesses on Main Street in Iola. In the event of rain, the contest will move to the Iola-Scandinavia (I-S) High School auditorium.
A trio of local music and entertainment experts, headed up by Linda Trepasso, of Iola, will be the judges for the event. Contestants will be judged on originality, quality of performance and audience reaction, among other considerations.
The winner of the contest will receive a grand prize gift basket filled with gift certificates and products valued at more than $200. Smaller gift baskets will be awarded to the second- and third-place finishers. The grand prize basket is currently on display in the lobby of Premier Community Bank at 505 E. State St.
WDUX Radio announcer Justin Moen will be master of ceremonies for the event, and Rick "King of Sound" Ertl will provide the sound system and any karaoke tunes needed by contestants. A complete list of his songs is available at Kafè Beans.
Hoop it Up performers from the I-S Community Fitness & Aquatic Center will provide additional entertainment before the contest starts and between acts.
In addition, there will be a 50-50 raffle, horse-drawn wagon rides, a farmers market and local restaurants will be selling food.
The Iola Historical Society will be unveiling and dedicating its second Historic Iola marker for the 1999 Father's Day Fire, which leveled half a block of downtown Iola. Fire engines and uniformed firefighters from some of the 13 fire departments that battled the blaze will be on hand.
The talent show night is one of six Thursday Night on Main events, held the second and fourth Thursdays now through August.
