I-S School Board proposes $3.9 million tax levy
The I-S School Board agreed to recommend a $172,180 tax levy increase at its July 12 meeting. This preliminary budget is $50,000 under the allowable revenue limit and reflects a 9.43 mill rate. The 2010-11 tax levy reflects a 4.5 percent increase over the $3.8 million levy for 2009-10.
Three tax levy options were presented to the board by the Finance Committee: 1.) $222,163 increase (5.8 percent), 9.55 mill rate, full amount allowed to levy; 2.) $172,180 increase (4.5 percent), 9.43 mill rate, $50,000 under levy; or 3.) $122,196 increase (3.2 percent), 9.31 mill rate, $100,000 under levy.
The board approved the $50,000 under levy option recommended by the committee. "It will be a good indicator that we are trying to control our budget," stated Finance Committee Chairman Bill Peterson.
"Choosing to under levy shows some consideration to taxpayers," District Administrator Joe Price agreed. "We made enough adjustments to our budget this year to get by with under levying by as much as $100,000 this year. The danger is we can never get that (unlevied amount) back unless we go to referendum."
Price referred to the retirement of three teachers and the resignation of two teachers. Replacements were hired for three of the five positions, reducing the district's staff (and budget) by two full-time positions.
"No matter what we do this year, our tax levy will likely go down in 2011-12," Price announced. He expects the 2011-12 tax levy to decrease by about 3 percent.
