Children's Garden provides seasonal fun
The Master Gardeners who volunteer at the Children's Garden in Pfeifer Park in conjunction with New London Parks and Rec Department have mixed hands-on fun with learning this summer, and each week the children have a new theme to look forward to. In June they planted their individual gardens and talked all about seeds and also how worms help seeds open. A dirt cake was a great prop for teaching youngsters about the growing process. The Children's Garden was one of the planned stops on the fundraising Garden Walk for Kenya Works last Saturday, July 24. Garden lovers were able to see first hand how the children's gardens were progressing.
A Leap Frog contest, music sing along and tea party are part of July's offerings at the Children's Garden. This week they made a scarecrow out of repurposed materials. Next week is fiesta day, a time to enjoy making salsa from their garden pickings.
In August the group will make bird feeders together and talk about bird-friendly plants. Harvest day will come up fast for everyone and during clean up day in the fall, the children will learn how to ready a garden for the next planting season.
