"Bye Bye Birdie" at NLHS Nov. 3-5
"Bye Bye Birdie" has been chosen for this year's music comedy, performed by New London High School acting students, under the direction of Joan Malliet. The show takes place Nov.3 - 5. Performances start at 7 p.m. in the New London High School auditorium.
A freshman at NLHS, Blake Spilman plays the role of Conrad Birdie, an Elvis Presley-type rock and roll star from the 1960s. This is Spilman's second time playing a rock 'n roll star, having performed a similar character at Fox Valley Christian Fellowship Church. In this story, Birdie is drafted into the Army and creates a near-riot with the teenage youth in the small town of Sweet Apple, Ohio when he stops there for one last publicity stunt.
Albert Peterson (Jake Beckman), a down-on-his-luck songwriter for Birdie, is worried about his future once Birdie leaves for the Army. His secretary, Rosie, (Anna Solberg), with whom Peterson has been romantically attached, convinces Peterson to write a farewell song for Birdie that he will sing on the Ed Sullivan Show, to a special fan, Kim McAfee (Casey Houlihan). Mr. McAfee (David Bubolz), a set-in-his-ways family man, tries to balance the craziness of the situation. Things at the Sullivan Show don't go exactly as planned.
Producer Laurie Flury also directs the choir; Deb Slozarek - costumes; Adam Hardt - conductor of the largest pit band in years; Steve Malliet and Luke Oberstadt - lighting; and a back stage crew led by Zeniff Flores.
Tickets for Bye Bye Birdie are $10 and all seats are reserved. Tickets go on sale Oct. 24 at the main office at New London High School.
