Chamber may occupy vacant Kwik Trip building
The former Kwik Trip building located at 420 N. Shawano St. was donated to the City of New London just a few months ago. It was then offered by the City of New London to the New London Chamber of Commerce to renovate and lease for a new Chamber office. Chamber Board of Directors and City Council then gave approval to proceed with renovation and occupancy.
While in the final stages of the donation, the owners of Kwik Trip sought an appraisal on the property. During the appraisal process it was discovered that an elevation error was made in the mid 1980's when the building was constructed. The elevation of the building was not within local ordinance, Department of Natural Resources or federal elevation guidelines.
At its current elevation, the building may be used for seasonal occupancy only - such as a park shelter, storage or a concession stand. To be used as Chamber offices or anything other than seasonal use, the building needs to be elevated approximately 2.5 feet.
The Chamber Board of Directors met Wednesday, Dec. 7 to review the situation and preliminary pricing information for an elevation project. After discussing options, the group decided to proceed with the project.
Chamber Executive Director Laurie Shaw will gather information and prepare renovation blueprints with the assistance of New London Building Supply. The Board of Directors will review the blueprints in January. Once approved, Shaw will begin the bidding process with Chamber member businesses for the construction, electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling and flooring sectors of the project.
"It's exciting to consider what our local businesses can contribute to this project," said Shaw. "We have so much talent in our community." She went on to explain that the intent is to have more than Chamber offices in the building. An educational/training and visitor center is also a part of the project.
Shaw said she will keep the community posted on the progress of this project. "Our hopes are to keep the project moving throughout the winter season."

KwikTrip donated a building that can't be occupied; saving them from an expensive renovation, expensive demolition, or just a huge loss on the sale. I wonder who the "elevation inspector" was way back in the mid 1980s? Or KwikTrip's architects and builders?
The city of Waupaca should be paying attention.
