Coaching contracts approved
Four coaching contracts were approved by the Iola-Scandinavia School Board at its Nov. 14 meeting.
Mark Vold was approved to coach freshmen girls basketball. It was noted that he has been a volunteer coach for several years.
The middle school girls basketball coach will be Nathan Schustek, a community member who has worked with the I-S Recreation Association.
Charmaine Cox was approved to coach junior varsity boys basketball. She is currently a long-term substitute teacher for middle/high school physical education.
Dan Loken has agreed to coach freshman boys basketball. A local resident and I-S alumni, Loken has lots of coaching experience and has worked with the I-S basketball team. He currently teaches in Marion.
The board also approved Amy Holterman to be the advisor for middle school Forensics. She was a student teacher in the district during the 2010-11 school year.
In other business, a family medical leave request was approved for Autumn Carlson. Her 12-week leave will begin around Feb. 22.
Board members asked how the district handled an extended leave. "We usually hire a long-term sub," District Administrator Joe Price replied.
Elementary Principal Tess Lecy-Wojcik reported on the Nov. 14 staff development session, which focused on student writing. The next session will focus on common core standards for language arts and math.
"Staff professional development is one of the keys - in every research - to student performance," Wojcik stated.
