EAA to use local airport for practice

May 23, 2012 | 13 comments

Aerobatic pilots that will be a part of of EAA AirVenture 2012 will practice at Waupaca Municipal Airport-Brunner Field.

When the Common Council met on May 15, it approved establishing a Temporary Air Box at Waupaca's airport from July 10 through Aug. 10.

The request came from EAA.

EAA AirVenture will be held in Oshkosh July 23 to 29.

The dates for the Temporary Air Box include days after EAA AirVenture, because pilots will also be practicing for an event being held after EAA's event.

Pete Andersen, the fixed base operator at the local airport, said he has been told the pilots will be here for two to three hours at a time when they practice.

They will first walk out their plans before taking to the air to practice them, he said.

"It will be the best of the best of the world," Andersen said. "It will be quite an opportunity that you don't get normally."

  1. This is great. Can't wait for this to all come to Waupaca. Should be fun to go down to the airport to check this out!

  2. Another impostor comment.

I don't attend air shows. People sometimes die cruel deaths, if and when the planes crash.

I also noticed that the ThyssenKrupp "representative" on the Airport Board is continuing to represent a corporation, in violation of the committee charter and the city ethics code. The city council is supposed to appoint individuals, not corporations, to city committees.

What's amazing is that this activity took place on the record - immediately after everyone in the room "certified" that they had reviewed the City Ethics Code. Of course, they aren't required to certify that they understand it, or that they are aware of the consequences for violating the code.

  5. I'm not a pilot but if you look around at other small airports throughout the state you will find that our airport is one of the best in terms of accessibility, services provided, condition etc. Granted the main reason this is so is because of the foundry but it benefits everyone. Just look at the number of hangers out there to get an idea of the numbers using the airport as their base. The airport manager should be commended for working with EAA to make this happen. I've never been to the EAA because I don't want to fight the crowds so this is will be a great opportunity to view a mini version of it in our own town.

Then you have no idea how to rate an airport.
Granted the main reason this is so is because of the foundry but it benefits everyone
99% of the city will never reap any benefits from the airport - zero. It should be a private operation, so the businesses operating from it pay their fair share.

Mostly it benefits the foundry. They get services subsidized by every taxpayer in the city, and they have no responsibilities. When they want something changed (or not changed), they just tell their own "corporate representative" how to vote on the city board.

The foundry should buy the airport or the city should clean up its airport board.

  7. It is sad some in the community we now call our home away from home do not possess a comprehensive working knowledge of all the airport offers to the area. When I first began the research of a place to train for a arrival of fifty aircraft to AirVenture three years ago, there were a plethora of opportunities. Waupaca stood out as the clear choice for many reasons. Proximity to Oshkosh, and enough room to accommodate fifty aircraft was paramount. Ancillary to that was having an Airport Manager that would embrace our needs, and also provide the infrastructure to facilitate those needs. We also needed accommodations for over 100 people. Pete Andersen and the City of Waupaca were the choice we made, and to date, both Pete and the City have not only met our expectations-they have exceeded them at every opportunity. As a result of the protracted period of time we enjoy while training in Waupaca, each pilot leaves a pile of case in Waupaca which includes the Comfort Inn, restaurants, shopping, etc. We are just one of many that leave money in the City as a result of the airport, and the financial impact to the community must not be mitigated. This is not a one time event for Cherokees to Oshkosh, as we also have a much smaller spring event each May. We have promoted the Airport thru online message boards, and I know for a fact pilots have visited Waupaca as a result. I sincerely hope everyone that resides in the Waupaca area can come to realize what a treasure you have in your airport, and what a loss you would feel if it ever ceased to exist.

And yes, people do die in aircraft. They also die in automobiles, boats, and house fires. We can not insulate ourselves 100% from risk. What we can do is mitigate risk to the fullest extent possible, as those of us that are immersed in aviation do each time we take to the air. Come out to the airport the week before AirVenture begins and see how enjoyable General Aviation really is!

The automobiles, boats, and houses aren't doing aerobatics - thousands of feet in the air. If they were, somebody would put a stop to it.

I went looking for some of these posts; here's the first one I found, on the Pilots of America board talking about Cherokees 2 Oshkosh:

"Sadly it looks like the lead in this is Terry Hocking who is part of the band of idiots involved in the Cherokee Pilots Assoc"

    Not my words.

  9. lastpercentile: Why don't you come out to the airport in July and introduce yourself. I think we could change your mind and enlighten you with the fact General Aviation and the Waupacua Airport serves a purpose and enhances the communtiy on many levels. As to the quote you found, it goes back many years and we have proven this individual incorrect many times over.

I look forward to meeting you in July!

So, working for FAA inspecting airports, rating and classifying airports does not qualify unless you are a licensed pilot? You're an idiot.

  11.
So, working for FAA inspecting airports, rating and classifying airports
If you're saying that's your job - and you aren't a pilot - something's very strange. That's like a highway engineer who has never driven a car, or an architect who won't take an elevator.

In fact, FAA safety inspectors (operations) are required to be "airmen".

You work for the FAA, and have never been to EAA?
I think we could change your mind and enlighten you with the fact General Aviation...
You lost me at "general aviation" - when I hear that, I think along the lines of "recreational vehicle" or "Corvette Club".

That's an assumption as nothing in my post indicates that I have any affiliation with FAA.

    Yeah, no indication at all.

Now I get it, you didn't know that FAA inspectors had to be pilots, did you?
