Fleet Farm property annexed into city
Mills Properties Inc. is another step closer to expanding its Fleet Farm store in Waupaca.
When the Common Council met on Dec. 20, it approved Mills Properties' petition to annex the property from the town of Waupaca into the city of Waupaca.
The council waived the first reading of the ordinance so that it could vote on it this month, instead of waiting until January.
Mayor Brian Smith said the city obviously wants to see the property on its tax roll this December.
The company petitioned for annexation into the city, because it wants to install city sewer and water.
The state requires that when property is annexed into a municipality, that municipality must pay the municipality from which the property was annexed five years of taxes.
In this case, the city must pay the town of Waupaca approximately $10,000 in town taxes. Mills Properties has agreed to pay that amount, on behalf of city.
Plans call for the current 30,000-square-foot store to expand to about 126,000 square feet. Construction is scheduled to begin in the spring.
The addition will be constructed around the existing store. It is expected to take a year to complete the entire project.
Bruce Buxton has done consulting work for Fleet Farm for about 30 years and told the council that the project will include Fleet Farm's signature silo - it will be slightly shorter and smaller than those at other stores due city ordinances in place for the local municipal airport.
"It will have everything that (the) Stevens Point (store) has," Buxton said of Waupaca's expanded store.
